Key takeaways
- Budget band: Rs 1.2L - Rs 8L for a standard Mumbai engagement.
- Timeline: 3-5 weeks, driven mainly by approval speed.
- Biggest cost driver: shoot days, then crew size — not camera choice.
- Cheapest real saving: a locked script before anything is booked.

The honest price band for virtual tours
Interactive 360 tours with hotspots, floor navigation and analytics. In the Mumbai market that work sits between Rs 1.2L - Rs 8L, and the spread is not a negotiating position — it reflects genuinely different pieces of work. At the lower end you are buying a tightly scoped, single-purpose asset built by a small senior team with minimal location and cast overhead. At the upper end you are buying original creative, a full unit, cast, art direction and multi-day production, and a finishing pass in a calibrated suite.
Quotes below that band exist. What they usually remove is invisible at the proposal stage and obvious in the delivered file: a junior operator instead of a 360 photographer, no recce, no proper sound treatment, one revision round, and delivery of a single master rather than platform-specific versions. None of those are unreasonable trade-offs if you make them deliberately. The problem is being sold them silently.
We quote three tiers against the same script for exactly this reason. When a client can see that the middle tier buys an extra shoot day and a grade session, the conversation stops being about discount and starts being about scope, which is the only conversation that improves the finished film.
| Tier | Indicative cost | What it buys | Delivery |
|---|---|---|---|
| Essential | Rs 1.2L - Rs 8L | Compact crew, one shoot day, standard edit | 3-5 weeks |
| Standard | Mid-band | Full crew, recce, grade and sound mix | 3-5 weeks |
| Premium | Upper band | Multi-day unit, cast, art direction, original score | Extended schedule |
Same script, three levels of production. Indicative Mumbai rates, exclusive of GST.

What each line item is actually paying for
A production budget is not a single number, it is six budgets in a trench coat, and knowing which one is inflated is the difference between cutting cost and cutting quality. On a shoot the dominant costs are people and days, not cameras. Renting a higher-end camera body for a day is a rounding error next to a second shoot day, which multiplies crew, kit, transport, catering and location fees simultaneously.
The line most often cut is the one that should never be: post production. Edit, grade and mix is where a good virtual tours project becomes a persuasive one, and it is invisible in a proposal because there is nothing to photograph. When a quote looks cheap, check the post allocation first — under 15 per cent almost always means a rushed edit and a laptop mix.
Contingency is the second tell. A Mumbai schedule with no contingency line is a schedule that has not accounted for monsoon, traffic, permission delays or a location that pulls out. We hold 5–8 per cent and return it unspent rather than pretending the risk does not exist.

03
The four decisions that move the number most
Almost every meaningful cost swing traces back to four choices, and all four are made by the client, not the production company. Getting them right before a quote is issued routinely changes the final invoice by 30 to 40 per cent — far more than any line-by-line negotiation.
First, runtime and version count. A 90-second master plus six platform cutdowns is a different job from a single 90-second file, and the cutdowns are where a budget quietly doubles. Second, the number of shoot days, which is the single largest multiplier in any production budget. Third, approval structure — every additional decision maker adds an average of one revision round. Fourth, lead time: a compressed schedule buys overtime, rush rentals and premium availability, none of which improve the film.
Pushes cost up
- Every additional shoot day (compounds crew, kit and transport)
- Multi-language versions and platform cutdowns
- More than two revision rounds
- Cast, art direction and controlled locations
- Compressed schedules requiring rush availability
Brings cost down
- A locked script before anything is booked
- Batching multiple films into one shoot block
- One named approver with authority to sign off
- Supplying brand assets, product references and legal copy on time
- Booking three to four weeks ahead of the delivery date

04
Does location inside Mumbai change the price?
Less than most buyers expect, but not zero. The base cost of crew and kit is the same across the city. What changes is access: permissions, parking, unit basing and how much of the day is lost to movement. A shoot in a corporate park with a loading bay and a service lift runs materially cheaper than the same shoot in a heritage building with a single narrow staircase and a two-hour access window.
Below is the practical picture across a representative spread of areas we work in weekly.
| Area | Pincode | Access and permission factor |
|---|---|---|
| Vikhroli | 400079 | Estate-issued gate passes only; no municipal permit needed. |
| Chembur | 400071 | Refinery-adjacent filming needs plant EHS clearance. |
| Ghatkopar | 400077 | LBS Marg exterior shoots need traffic police intimation. |
| Dadar | 400014 | Shivaji Park requires BMC G-North ward permission. |
| Mahalaxmi | 400011 | Racecourse filming needs RWITC approval. |

Reading a quote like a producer
Three production quotes for the same brief will often differ by a factor of two, and the difference is almost never the camera. Compare them on scope, not on total: how many shoot days and crew roles, who is actually on the job, what post is included, how many deliverables, and what happens when something changes.
Ask for the deliverable list in writing. "Final video" is not a deliverable — 360 tour build, Hotspot content, Embed code is. Ask who the named producer is and whether that person is on the shoot day. Ask what a change request costs after fine cut. The answers separate a production partner from a vendor faster than any showreel.
- Confirm in writing: 360 tour build.
- Confirm in writing: Hotspot content.
- Confirm in writing: Embed code.
- Confirm in writing: Visitor analytics.
06
Timeline, and why it drives cost
3-5 weeks is the realistic window for virtual tours in Mumbai, assuming approvals arrive when promised. The schedule is not padded — it is the sequence of dependencies, and compressing it does not remove work, it just moves it into overtime.
In practice the client controls most of the calendar. Script approval and permission lead times routinely take longer than the shoot itself. We publish review dates in the schedule at kickoff so a slipped approval is visible immediately rather than at delivery.
- 1
Week 1
Discovery, treatment and shooting script for approval
- 2
Week 2
Recce, permissions filed, casting, call sheet prepared
- 3
Week 3
Production — unit on site, selects reviewed at wrap
- 4
Week 4
Offline edit, rough cut and fine cut review
- 5
Week 5
Grade, sound mix, graphics, platform masters delivered

07
How to measure whether it worked
Most video budgets in Mumbai are approved without a success metric, which is why the second film is always harder to get signed off than the first. Decide the number before production starts and instrument for it: view-through rate at 25, 50 and 75 per cent tells you where the script loses people; click-through and assisted conversions tell you whether the proposition landed; and for internal work, completion rate against a training or onboarding cohort is the only figure that matters.
Set the benchmark honestly. A virtual tours asset placed on a landing page above the fold behaves nothing like the same cut running as paid social, and comparing the two produces a false conclusion. We publish expected ranges with the delivery so the marketing team is not benchmarking a 90-second explainer against a six-second bumper.
Review at 30 days, not at launch week. The first week's numbers are dominated by internal traffic and paid burst spend. The 30-day picture is what tells you which cutdown to fund next, which thumbnail to replace, and whether the opening ten seconds needs a re-edit — a cheap fix that regularly doubles retention without a reshoot.

Where these projects go wrong
Failed video projects in Mumbai rarely fail on craft. They fail on decisions made before anyone picked up a camera — an unclear owner, a brief written as a format, a review chain nobody mapped. The pattern is consistent enough that we plan against it explicitly, and it is worth checking your own project against the same list before you commission anything.
The most expensive of these is the late approver. A stakeholder who appears at fine cut with a structural objection is not asking for a revision, they are asking for a reshoot, and by then the crew is on another job and the location is booked out. Naming one arbiter at kickoff is free and saves more money than any negotiation on day rates.
- 01Signing off a script without a storyboard, then paying to rebuild in post.
- 02No distribution plan. A film with no media budget behind it dies on a shared drive.
- 03Cutting audio to protect the camera budget. Viewers forgive soft focus, never bad sound.
- 04Skipping the recce. Most Mumbai overruns trace back to a location nobody visited.
- 05Buying the cheapest quote, then funding the real cost through change requests.
- 06Briefing a runtime instead of an outcome — 'a two-minute video' is a spec, not a brief.
- 07Adding approvers late. Every extra reviewer adds a message and a revision round.
If you cannot tick all seven, the brief is not ready yet.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
What is the minimum realistic budget for virtual tours in Mumbai?
Realistically the lower bound of Rs 1.2L - Rs 8L. Below that you are buying a reduced scope — fewer crew roles, no recce and one revision round — which can be the right call for a tactical asset but not for a flagship one.
Why do quotes for the same brief vary so much?
Because "the same brief" almost never means the same scope. Compare shoot days, crew roles and post depth, not headline totals. A quote that is 40 per cent cheaper has usually removed post production, versioning or seniority.
Is GST included in these figures?
No. All bands quoted here are exclusive of GST, which applies at the prevailing rate on production services in India.
Do you charge for revisions?
Two structured revision rounds are inside every quote. Beyond that, changes are quoted per item — and we tell you the cost before doing the work, not after.
Can we phase the payment?
Standard terms are a mobilisation advance, a milestone payment at shoot completion and the balance on final delivery. Longer retainers are billed monthly.
